Short History
The first Bowin was built to "show" standard for Glyn Scott to race in Tasman and Gold Star races using the ex Piers Courage Cosworth spare FVA engine. It was reasonably successful in F2 events with the highlights being an outright Gold Star round win and fourth in the Japanese Grand Prix.
When Glyn Scott decided to move on to an Elfin 600 with 2 litre Waggott engine the engine and gearbox from the Bowin were fitted to his Lotus 23B. After Glyns fatal accident the Lotus 23B was sold to Alan Ling and was driven by Bruce Gowans to great effect in the Australian Sports Car Chamionship. When the 23B itself was upgraded to Waggott power the FVA was traded in to Paul England. The engine was then used in a speedboat that was sunk off the Victorian coast and not retrieved. The gearbox was sold at the same time to Peter Turnbull of North Western Tasmania for use in a Holden engined special known as the Turnham. It is believed that he still own it.
The car was then reputed to have been fitted with an 1100cc Ford engine for Fourmla Three and some type of transaxle.
Eventually it appeared with a Motor Improvements Corolla engine and modified VW gearbox in Formula 3 races, one race by Wayne Newton and then for use by John Crouchley fitted with March type bodywork.
It was purchased in this form by Ian Peters in 1983 from an auction in Adelaide and reconverted for Historic Group O but used an ex Bob Holden Wagott tuned Lotus twin Cam engine. This was eventually fitted with Lucas fuel injection as per the original FVA and competed successfully in historic racing until a suspension failure at the 1989 Adelaide Grand Prix meeting caused serious damage. The tub was reskinned and straigtened by Chas Talbot. New wishbones were constructed to the original drawings and new wheels were cast by Magnesium Technologies. At this stage the project was shelved while Ian Peters competed in his own Gold Star foray from 1998 till 2004.
The car is currently being reassembled and an FVA engine or parts are being sought.
- August 2007, An FVA cylinder head and three ancillary castings have been acquired.
- October 2007 A second FVA cylinder head has been acquired along with one cam, carrier, 3 pistons, some timing gears and a front plate.
- January 2008 A small group of parts has been acquired with water pipes, more timing gears and a cosworth oil pump.
- June 2008 We have acquired a front cover, front plate, water pump, two inspection covers and a front top cover
The last major component missing is an FVA cam cover. All other engine parts will be sourced new.
